Sourdough Crackers
One more example of how homemade is better than store bought. These deliciously irresistible crackers will have friends and family coming by just for snack time and if you are planning a get together they are instantly a show stopper.
Ingredient’s
1c (113g) Whole Wheat Flour
1c (227g) Sourdough Starter (Phyllis)
4 tbl Butter – Room Temp
1 tbl Garlic Powder
1 tsp Ground Thyme
1 tsp Kosher Salt, plus more to sprinkle on top.
Steps
- In a medium sized bowl mix Sourdough Starter, Butter, Salt and Spices until thoroughly combined.
- Add the Whole Wheat Flour and mix for several minutes until the dough comes together and has a smooth appearance and feel.
- Divide the dough in half, about 200g each, then wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes to 2 hours, until the dough is firm.
- One at a time place the dough halves of Parchment Paper dusted with Whole Wheat Flour and roll out to about 1/16” thick.
- Using a fork poke holes in the dough in connecting strips until the whole surface is covered in small holes. This prevents the dough from bubbling up when baking.
- Using a Sprayer or pastry brush, coat the top of the dough with olive oil then sprinkle with kosher salt. Kosher Salt works best because the salt crystals are bigger than table salt, giving your crackers a better appearance and a more even flavor.
- Using a Pizza or Ravioli cutter cut 1” wide strips in the dough then rotate 90° and cut 1/2” wide strips in the dough. You can cut the crackers square or any shape you would like just try to keep them as even as possible so the all cook the same.
- Once both sets of dough are ready place on Sheet trays lined with Parchment Paper and all and bake in a 350° preheated oven for 12 minutes then rotate and the Baking sheets, top to bottom and front to back then cook 12 more minutes.
- Leave crackers on the sheet trays to cool, if you can wait, they smell Amazing!
- Store the crackers in an airtight container, they last about a week or two, although they usually get eaten in a day or two at our house, especially if the mother in law finds out. 🙂
